Common Misperceptions
Polluted and unclean air
Bees thriving in the area
While a common misperception is that the air around CN’s plant is unclean due to the company’s activities, the thriving beehives at the CN quarry prove otherwise, noting that bees have been used as biological indicators since 1962 to monitor environmenal pollution.
Health Implications of Cement Manufacturing
Clean Bill of Health
Periodic and thorough physical examinations are done to all CN employees to monitor their health. Their close proximity to the cement plant has not affected their health in any way, disproving an association between cement manufacturing and poor health; a fact further confirmed by the internationally-renowned German scientific institute VDZ.
CN Activities are Damaging the Environment
CN’s Environmental Performance
Contrary to certain misperceptions, CN invests heavily in environmental sustainability and operates according to the highest international standards of environmental performance, be it as related to the rehabilitation of its quarry or otherwise.
Inexistence of Quarries and Cement Plants in Developed Countries in Proximity of Large Cities
Existence of Quarries and Cement Plants in Proximity of Large Cities
While some believe that Lebanon is an exception in having cement manufacturing plants in proximity of villages and large cities, the reality is that even in some of the most developed and environmentally-conscious countries such as Germany, Sweden, or Italy, many of their cement plants are located in the vicinity of cities or villages.
Petcoke Emits Harmful SO2 and is no longer used in Cement Production
The Widespread and Safe use of Petcoke
Petcoke is used in many cement plants. In fact, the production process results in absorption of the SO2 originating from petcoke into the final product as gypsum where it contributes to the properties of cement.
